The Christian 12 Step Recovery Program is at the opposite end of the
spectrum when you try to compare it to any other 12 Step Program.
To see one of the major differences let us look at the Christian 12 Step
Programs First Step.
The Christian 12 Step Program immediately in the First Step tells us why
we have the problems that we are seeking help for.
The Christian First Step tells us that we are powerless over the effects
of our separation from God. The effect of our separation from God is death.
Death, in that by not coming to believe in Jesus Christ we will not have eternal
life. And we are powerless over this because there is nothing we can do to
achieve or acquire salvation. No amount of wishing, hoping, other programs or
money can bring about eternal life for any of us.
The second part of the First Step tells us that we are powerless over the
effects of our lack of fellowship with God. The effects of our lack of
fellowship with God is sin or sins in our life. And we are powerless over sin
because it is only God who can as David says in Psalm 51:10 create in us a clean
heart. Again, no amount of doing anything can restore us to fellowship with God
while we are practicing sin. Only the Grace of God through the power and work of
Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit can do that! Yes, we can go back to reading the
Bible, praying, and maybe even go to Church, but God will always bestow His
Grace upon us in His time not ours. That is why it is so important to stay in
fellowship with God and allow Him to work in our lives by helping others. Once
we stop doing the "Great Commission" we place ourselves in jeopardy to be
deceived by our adversary. Therefore, the Christian First Step is our "First
Step" towards having victory over "sin and death".
Also, with the Christian 12 Step Recovery Program once we go through it we are
Recovered. Once Jesus heals us we are healed once and for all. We do not have to
keep recovering. We maintain our fellowship with God by living in Steps Ten,
Eleven, and Twelve.
Secular 12 Step groups are only vehicles that God uses to draw some people
closer to Him. They are only places for true believers to "fish". God uses the
fisherman to pull the ones in He has drawn closer so that He can offer them
eternal life, heal them, make them whole, and allow His love to work through
them to help others.
