These blogs on the work of Thomas a Kempis are for those of us who desire to be more like our Lord, King, and Savior Jesus Christ.
For many of us who are usually distracted by our jobs, our families, our friends, our ministries and or works of charity and our studies of God, His Church and Sacred Scripture we find that often we develop tendencies to lose the perception of what it is meant by “ Seeking the Kingdom of God” .
Seeking the Kingdom of God is Seeking Jesus and learning to be more like Him and since God is Love, it is His Love that we need more in our hearts to share with the world. This means we have to make time for Him. It is a fact that the more time we spend with a person the more we get to know them. Therefore, it is impossible to be like Jesus and never spend any time with Him. Now some may say that just by being active in a Ministry, and or works of Charity, and reading and learning about God, His Church, and Sacred Scripture is spending time with Him. Really? Do you honestly think that if you go to a game or a concert with someone you will know them? Do you honestly think that by reading about anyone will allow you to really know them?
We first need to start on our knees. If you have a disability that prevents this God understands, He sees your heart. After we get on our knees we need to ask God for help. We need to confess to Him any non-confessed sin. Then we need to ask Him to help us to forgive anyone in our lives who has ever hurt us -real or imagined. We need to ask Him for help in how to pray. We need to ask Him for help to be grateful for everything and every person He has and ever has placed in our lives.
We need to ask Him to help us learn how to accept His Love. We need to tell Him that we are surrendering right at this moment, our minds, our body, our spirits and that His will be done and not ours. We need to ask Him to help us to remember that He is with us every moment of the day starting right now. And we need to ask Him to help us share the Love He has bestowed on us.
Thomas a Kempis was a German Priest. He translated into Latin this Spiritual Dairy that was made by about two or three Priests in the fourteenth century. There are four books in the work consisting of one hundred and fourteen chapters.
Thoughts Helpful in the Life of the Soul
We start out by a teaching of Jesus in that whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness and goes on to say that for one to understand this teaching they must try to pattern their whole life on Christ.
Let us listen; “ it is not learning that makes a man holy and just, but a virtuous life makes him pleasing to God.” and this virtuous life can only be accomplished by the Grace and Love of God that then allows us to Love Him in return and to serve Him alone. We must turn our hearts from the things in this world to the Kingdom of God.
Let us listen; “ For they who follow their own evil passions stain their consciences and lose the Grace of God.”
We will not be judged by how many things we have gathered unto ourselves, nor by how much knowledge we have but we will be judged by our deeds. In fact, the more knowledge you have about God the more you will be judged; Let us listen; “unless your life is also the more holy”.
We need to be humble when we think of God and others. We must always humbly come to Him and receive Him.
When we think of others we must think highly of them, for they too have been created in the image and likeness of God. Let us listen; “if you see another sin openly or commit a serious crime, do not consider yourself better, for you do not know how long you can remain good. All men are frail, but you must admit that none is more frail than yourself”.
